If you have UnitedHealthcare insurance in Maryland or Virginia, you may be able to use it for therapy at Allswell. We're in-network with both commercial UnitedHealthcare plans and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan (UHC's Medicaid product) in both states.Β

What you pay and how coverage works depends on which type of UnitedHealthcare plan you have, so it's worth understanding which one you're on before getting started.

Does UnitedHealthcare Cover Online Therapy?

Yes. UnitedHealthcare covers online therapy across both its commercial and Medicaid plans, including the secure video sessions Allswell provides. Under federal mental health parity laws, UHC plans cover virtual mental health services the same way they cover in-person visits.Β

The specifics of what you pay depend on your plan type, but coverage for online therapy is standard across most UHC products.

Which UnitedHealthcare Plan Do You Have? Commercial vs. UnitedHealthcare Community Plan

UnitedHealthcare offers two main types of coverage that Allswell accepts: commercial plans and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan (Medicaid).

Commercial UnitedHealthcare

Commercial UHC is the type of insurance most people get through their employer or buy as an individual plan. Common plan names include UnitedHealthcare Choice, Choice Plus, Options PPO, Navigate, and Select.Β

If you have a commercial UHC plan, your insurance card will say "UnitedHealthcare" with a plan name, and there's typically no reference to Medicaid.Β

For most UnitedHealthcare plans, mental health benefits are administered by Optum Behavioral Health, not by UHC directly. Optum is a sister company to UnitedHealthcare under the same parent corporation, and it handles the provider network, claims processing, and member services for behavioral health.

UnitedHealthcare Community Plan

UnitedHealthcare Community Plan is UHC's Medicaid managed care product. In Maryland, it's offered through the HealthChoice program. In Virginia, it's offered through Cardinal Care.Β

If you have a UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, your insurance card will say "UnitedHealthcare Community Plan" along with your state's Medicaid program information.

How Allswell Works With UnitedHealthcare Insurance

Allswell is in-network with UnitedHealthcare in Maryland and Virginia for both commercial and Medicaid plans. Your therapy sessions are billed directly to your plan, and you don't need to submit claims or file paperwork. Our team handles the billing.

Before your first session, we'll verify your UHC benefits and let you know your estimated cost per session. If you have a UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, we'll confirm your coverage. If there are any issues, we'll let you know before you start.

Allswell specializes in LGBTQ+ affirming, trauma-informed therapy, and UHC covers it the same way it covers any other outpatient mental health service. That includes therapy related to identity exploration, gender-affirming support, minority stress, coming out, relationships, and any other concern you want to bring to a session.

Service areas

Allswell's therapists are licensed in Maryland and Virginia. You'll need to be physically located in one of those states at the time of your session.

How to Check If Your UnitedHealthcare Plan Covers Allswell

The easiest way is to book a free consultation with our team. We'll verify your UHC coverage and confirm whether your plan is in-network with Allswell before you schedule your first session.

You can also call the behavioral health number on the back of your UHC card (not the general medical number) and ask whether Allswell Health is an in-network provider for outpatient mental health services.

What UnitedHealthcare typically covers at Allswell

UHC plans generally cover individual therapy sessions, which is the core of what Allswell provides. This includes your initial 60-minute Welcome Session and ongoing 45-minute follow-up sessions. Routine outpatient therapy with UHC and Optum does not require prior authorization, so you can start as soon as your coverage is verified.

LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy covered by UnitedHealthcare

UnitedHealthcare covers therapy regardless of the reason you're seeking care, including LGBTQ+ affirming therapy, gender-affirming support, and therapy related to identity, coming out, relationships, and minority stress. There are no restrictions on the topics you can bring to a session.

Every Allswell therapist is specifically trained and vetted for LGBTQ+ affirming care. For Medicaid members, who may have had a harder time finding affirming providers in-network elsewhere, that can make a real difference in how therapy feels from the first session.

What You'll Pay With UnitedHealthcare Insurance

What you pay depends on the type of UHC plan you have.

If you have a commercial UHC plan

Your cost will depend on your plan's copay, deductible, and coinsurance structure. Here's a general idea of what to expect:

  • HMO and similar plans: Typically a flat copay per session, often in the $20 to $40 range. Deductibles may not apply to outpatient therapy on these plans.
  • PPO, POS, and Choice Plus plans: A copay (usually $25 to $50) or coinsurance (often 10% to 30%) after you meet your deductible.
  • High-deductible health plans (HDHPs): You'll pay the full contracted rate per session (often $100 to $175) until you meet your annual deductible. After that, you'll typically pay a coinsurance percentage. If you have an HSA, you can use those funds toward your therapy costs.

These are general ranges. Your actual cost depends on your specific plan, and we'll confirm your estimate before your first session.

If you have UnitedHealthcare Community Plan (Medicaid)

Your therapy sessions are fully covered with no out-of-pocket cost. There are no copays, no deductibles, and no coinsurance for covered mental health services. Your Medicaid coverage doesn't change anything about the care itself, just what you pay.

How to Start Therapy With Allswell Using UnitedHealthcare

Getting started is the same process for all Allswell clients, and our team handles the insurance side for you.

Step 1: Book a free consultation

Schedule a 15-to-20-minute call with one of our Care Coordinators. You can book through our website, email us at hello@joinallswell.com, or call 443-543-8367. This call is free, and there's no commitment.

Step 2: Verify your coverage

During or after your consultation, our team will verify your UnitedHealthcare benefits and confirm your estimated cost per session.Β

If you have a UnitedHealthcare Community Plan (Medicaid), we'll confirm that your plan is in-network. We'll let you know if there are any issues before you schedule your first session.

Step 3: Get matched with a therapist

Based on what you share in your consultation, we'll connect you with a therapist whose experience, approach, and availability fit your needs.

Step 4: Complete your intake

You'll fill out a brief intake through our secure client portal and add your payment method. This helps your therapist prepare for your first conversation.

Step 5: Start therapy

Your first session (your Welcome Session) is 60 minutes. After that, ongoing sessions are 45 minutes, typically on a weekly basis. All sessions happen through secure, HIPAA-compliant video. Payment is processed automatically through your client portal 48 hours before each session.
