Paying for Allswell Therapy With Cigna Insurance
If you have Cigna insurance in Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC, you may be able to use it for therapy at Allswell. We're in-network with Cigna (sometimes listed as Cigna / Evernorth) in all three areas.
What you pay and how coverage works depends on your specific plan, so it's worth understanding a few details about your coverage before getting started.
Does Cigna Insurance Cover Online Therapy?
Yes. Cigna covers online therapy across its commercial plans, including the secure video sessions Allswell provides. Under federal mental health parity laws, Cigna plans cover virtual mental health services the same way they cover in-person visits. The specifics of what you pay depend on your plan type, but coverage for online therapy is standard across most Cigna products.
If your insurance card shows a name like Cigna, Evernorth, or Cigna / Evernorth, your mental health benefits are administered through the same system. If you're not sure whether your plan is in-network with Allswell, our team can help you check.
Cigna vs. Evernorth: who manages your mental health benefits?
Evernorth is a subsidiary of The Cigna Group that handles health services, including behavioral health. When you use your Cigna plan for therapy, your mental health benefits are managed by Evernorth Behavioral Health behind the scenes.
That means the behavioral health phone number on the back of your Cigna card may route to Evernorth rather than to Cigna's main customer service line. If you're calling to verify coverage or check whether a provider is in-network, use the behavioral health number rather than the general medical line. You'll get more accurate information that way.
Cigna and Evernorth share the same provider network for mental health, so if your Allswell therapist is in-network with Cigna, they're in-network with Evernorth. There's nothing extra you need to do.
How Allswell Works With Cigna Insurance
Allswell is in-network with Cigna / Evernorth in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC. Your therapy sessions are billed directly to your plan, and you don't need to submit claims or file paperwork. Our team handles the billing.
Before your first session, we'll verify your Cigna benefits and let you know your estimated cost per session. If there are any issues with your coverage, we'll let you know before you start.
Allswell specializes in LGBTQ+ affirming, trauma-informed therapy, and Cigna covers it the same way it covers any other outpatient mental health service. That includes therapy related to identity exploration, gender-affirming support, minority stress, coming out, relationships, and any other concern you want to bring to a session.
Service areas
Allswell's therapists are licensed in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC. You'll need to be physically located in one of those areas at the time of your session. Cigna / Evernorth is accepted in all three areas.
How to verify if your Cigna plan covers Allswell
The easiest way is to book a free consultation with our team. We'll verify your Cigna coverage and confirm whether your plan is in-network with Allswell before you schedule your first session.
You can also call the behavioral health number on the back of your Cigna card (not the general medical number) and ask whether Allswell is an in-network provider for outpatient mental health services.
What if Cigna doesnβt cover my Allswell therapy?
Your options depend on what type of Cigna plan you have.
If your plan has out-of-network benefits
Some Cigna plans include out-of-network mental health coverage. If yours does, you can see an Allswell therapist out of network and submit a superbill for partial reimbursement.
A superbill is a detailed receipt your insurance needs to process an out-of-network claim. You can submit it through the Cigna member portal or by mail. Reimbursement amounts and policies vary by plan, and you'll be responsible for any portion Cigna doesn't cover.
If your plan doesn't have out-of-network benefits
If your Cigna plan doesn't include out-of-network coverage, your main option would be to see an Allswell therapist at our self-pay rates.
Self-pay option
You can also see an Allswell therapist at our self-pay rates: $175 for the initial intake session and $125 for ongoing sessions. We accept Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) card payments as well.
What You'll Pay With Cigna Insurance
What you pay depends on your plan type. Here's a general idea of what to expect.
If you have a copay-based plan
Most Cigna HMO, PPO, and Open Access Plus (OAP) plans charge a flat copay for outpatient therapy. The exact amount varies by plan.
If you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP)
After that, you'll typically pay a coinsurance percentage until you hit your out-of-pocket maximum. The exact percentage varies by plan.
If you have out-of-network coverage
If you're seeing an Allswell therapist out of network, you'll pay the therapist's full fee upfront and then submit a superbill for partial reimbursement. Reimbursement amounts vary by plan, and you'll be responsible for any portion Cigna doesn't cover. Out-of-network costs are typically higher than in-network.
How to Start Affirming LGBTQ+ Therapy With Allswell Using Cigna Insurance
Getting started is the same process for all Allswell clients, and our team handles the insurance side for you.
Step 1: Book a free consultation
Schedule a 15-to-20-minute call with one of our Care Coordinators. You can book through our website, email us at hello@joinallswell.com, or call 443-543-8367. This call is free, and there's no commitment.
Step 2: Verify your coverage
During or after your consultation, our team will verify your Cigna benefits and confirm your estimated cost per session. We'll let you know if there are any issues before you schedule your first session.
Step 3: Get matched with a therapist
Based on what you share in your consultation, we'll connect you with a therapist whose experience, approach, and availability fit your needs.
Step 4: Complete your intake
You'll fill out a brief intake through our secure client portal and add your payment method. This helps your therapist prepare for your first conversation.
Step 5: Start therapy
Your first session (your Welcome Session) is 60 minutes. After that, ongoing sessions are 45 minutes, typically on a weekly basis. All sessions happen through secure, HIPAA-compliant video. Payment is processed automatically through your client portal.
Frequently Asked Questions: Starting Online Therapy With Allswell and Cigna Insurance
If you still have questions, these are some of the ones that come up most often.
Do I need a referral from my primary care doctor to use Cigna for therapy?
Most Cigna plans don't require a referral for outpatient mental health services. Some HMO plans may have different rules, so if you're unsure, call the member services number on the back of your card to confirm. You can book a consultation with Allswell at any time.
How many therapy sessions will Cigna cover per year?
Most Cigna commercial plans do not impose a hard annual limit on outpatient therapy sessions. Under federal mental health parity laws, insurers can't apply stricter visit limits to mental health than they do to comparable medical services. That said, some older or employer-customized plans may have specific limits, so it's worth confirming with your plan directly or with our team.
How soon can I start therapy after signing up?
Most clients are able to schedule their first session within a week or two of their consultation call. Once your coverage is verified and you're matched with a therapist, you'll complete a brief intake and schedule your Welcome Session.
What happens if I move out of Allswell's service area?
Allswell's therapists are licensed in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC. If you move out of those areas, your therapist would no longer be able to see you because they wouldn't be licensed in your new state. If that happens, our team can help you plan for the transition and connect you with resources for finding a new provider.
What's the difference between a copay, deductible, and coinsurance with Cigna?
A copay is a flat amount you pay per session (for example, $30). A deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before your insurance starts covering costs. Coinsurance is the percentage of the cost you pay after your deductible is met (for example, 20%). Not every plan has all three, and some plans waive the deductible for outpatient therapy. Our team will walk you through your specific cost structure before your first session.
