Paying for Allswell Therapy With Aetna Insurance
If you have Aetna insurance in Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC, you may be able to use it for therapy at Allswell. We're in-network with Aetna commercial plans in Virginia and DC, and with Aetna Better Health (Medicaid) in Maryland and Virginia.Β
What you pay and how coverage works depends on the type of Aetna plan you have, so it's worth understanding which one you're on before getting started.
Does Aetna Insurance Cover Online Therapy?
Yes. Aetna covers online therapy across its commercial and Medicaid plans, including the secure video sessions Allswell provides. Under federal mental health parity laws, Aetna plans cover virtual mental health services the same way they cover in-person visits. The specifics of what you pay depend on your plan type, but coverage for online therapy is standard across most Aetna products.
Unlike some other insurers, Aetna manages behavioral health benefits in-house rather than through a separate company. That means when you call the number on the back of your card, you're reaching Aetna directly for both medical and mental health questions.
How Allswell Works With Aetna Insurance
Allswell is in-network with Aetna, which means your therapy sessions are billed directly to your plan. You don't need to submit claims or file paperwork on your end. Our team handles the billing.
Before your first session, we'll verify your Aetna benefits and let you know your estimated cost per session. If there are any issues with your coverage, we'll flag them before you start so there are no surprises.
Allswell specializes in LGBTQ+ affirming, trauma-informed therapy, and Aetna covers it the same way it covers any other mental health service. That includes therapy focused on identity exploration, gender-affirming support, minority stress, coming out, relationships, and any other concern you want to bring to a session.
Service areas
Allswell's therapists are licensed in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC. You'll need to be physically located in one of those areas at the time of your session. Aetna coverage at Allswell breaks down by state:
- Virginia: Aetna commercial plans and Aetna Better Health of Virginia (Medicaid)
- Washington, DC: Aetna commercial plans
- Maryland: Aetna Better Health of Maryland (Medicaid)
How to verify if your Aetna plan covers Allswell
The easiest way is to book a free consultation with our team. We'll verify your Aetna coverage and confirm whether your plan is in-network with Allswell before you schedule your first session.
You can also call the member services number on the back of your Aetna card and ask whether Allswell is an in-network provider for outpatient mental health services. If you have Aetna Better Health (Medicaid), you can call them as well.
What if Aetna doesnβt cover my Allswell therapy?
Your options depend on what type of Aetna plan you have.
Aetna plan with out-of-network benefits
Some Aetna commercial plans include out-of-network mental health coverage. If yours does, you can see an Allswell therapist out of network and submit a superbill for partial reimbursement.Β
A superbill is a detailed receipt that includes the information your insurance needs to process an out-of-network claim. You can submit it through Aetna's member portal or by mail. Reimbursement amounts and policies vary by plan, and you'll be responsible for any portion Aetna doesn't cover.
If your plan doesn't have out-of-network benefits
If your Aetna commercial plan doesn't include out-of-network coverage, out-of-network therapy generally isn't available. Your main option would be to see an Allswell therapist at our self-pay rates.
Aetna Better Health (Medicaid)
Out-of-network reimbursement and superbills generally don't apply to Medicaid plans. Your options are more limited, but there are still a few things you can do.
You can check whether you can switch MCOs. Medicaid members in Maryland and Virginia can choose or change their managed care organization during certain enrollment windows. Allswell is in-network with several other Medicaid MCOs in both states.
You can also reach out to our Care Coordinators, who can walk you through what we're seeing with your coverage and help you figure out a path forward. Email us at hello@joinallswell.com or call 443-543-8367.
Self-pay option
For any Aetna plan, you can also see an Allswell therapist at our self-pay rates: $175 for the initial intake session and $125 for ongoing sessions. We accept HSA and FSA card payments as well.
What You'll Pay With Aetna Insurance
What you pay depends on the type of Aetna plan you have.
Commercial Aetna plans
Your cost will depend on your plan's copay, deductible, and coinsurance structure. Here's a general idea of what to expect:
- HMO and similar plans: Typically a flat copay per session. The exact amount varies by plan. Deductibles may not apply to outpatient therapy on these plans.
- PPO, POS, and Choice POS II plans: A copay or coinsurance after you meet your deductible. Amounts vary by plan.
- High-deductible health plans (HDHPs): You'll pay the full contracted rate per session until you meet your annual deductible. After that, you'll typically pay a coinsurance percentage. If you have an HSA, you can use those funds toward your therapy costs.
Your actual cost depends on your specific plan, and we'll confirm your estimate before your first session.
Aetna Better Health (Medicaid)
Your therapy sessions are fully covered with no out-of-pocket cost. There are no copays, no deductibles, and no coinsurance for covered mental health services. Your Medicaid coverage doesn't change anything about the care itself, just what you pay.
